History & Coaching Philosophy

Matt’s coaching philosophy was shaped long before he formally became a coach. While playing in the Premier League with Blackpool in 2010, he actively sought out specialist training environments that went beyond traditional football conditioning.

This led him to work closely with performance specialist Nick Clegg, whose methods exposed Matt to a wide range of disciplines including Olympic lifting, reaction training, speed development and movement work alongside athletes from sports such as martial arts and motorsport.

That experience fundamentally changed how Matt viewed goalkeeper development. Rather than generic gym work or standard drills, he saw the value of power development, reaction speed, cognitive training and movement efficiency - all tailored specifically to the demands of goalkeeping.

Over time, Matt began applying these principles within his local community, using his own equipment and adapting elite methods for developing goalkeepers. As his coaching career progressed and his availability increased, this approach evolved into a dedicated goalkeeper training programme and facility focused entirely on position-specific performance.

At the heart of Matt’s coaching is the belief that:

  • Goalkeepers require bespoke physical and cognitive training
  • Learning from multiple sports and disciplines enhances performance
  • Development should mirror the real demands of the game
Goalkeeper development built on experience, not theory
